Do you want professional help with your workouts, but the idea of hiring a personal trainer on your own makes you nervous, or your budget just won’t allow it? Try small-group workouts, where you can train effectively together with the group.
What small group?
Small-group training combines the best of personal training and group exercise: you get to work out under the guidance of a professional trainer alongside a group of like-minded people. Small-group workouts are based on a specific theme, such as weight management, body sculpting, cross-training, running, or, for example, kettlebell training.
Depending on the theme, small groups may also cover topics such as nutrition, recovery, or even motivation. The group’s theme also affects the number of participants: there may be anywhere from three to more than ten people training with you in the group.
Small-group training sessions are a more affordable option than one-on-one coaching, since the total cost of the training is shared among several participants. Small-group sessions are usually held once a week at a prearranged time.
Even though small-group workouts are done as a group, you can still receive personalized support from the trainer. If needed, you can schedule a fitness consultation or a one-on-one session with the group’s personal trainer before the small-group workouts begin. This also makes it easier for the trainer to guide you according to your needs during the group workouts.
Small-group training is generally suitable for everyone. However, if you have any doubts, talk to your personal trainer about your options for participating in small-group training.
The spirit of working together
Katri, who lives in Helsinki, worked out in a small CrossTraining group for three years. We asked her what she liked best about the small group and why.
Why did you join the small group?
“I wanted to learn a wide range of strength training techniques, take on new challenges, and build my muscle strength.”
What is the difference between small-group workouts and one-on-one training?
“Working out together in small group classes is fun and rewarding. If needed or desired, you can also receive personalized guidance for your workouts. Personal training is all about working toward the goals and exercises agreed upon with each individual client.”
What was the best part about the small group?
“My muscle strength and endurance improved, I learned how to do gym exercises with proper form, and I experienced the joy of working together and a positive, supportive team spirit.”
Who would you recommend small-group workouts to?
“For all fitness enthusiasts who want to improve their gym workouts and muscle strength, for example, under the guidance of an instructor and in a group setting.”
