Long workdays spent in front of a computer, poor posture, and muscles tense from stress can lead to a sore neck, shoulders, and back. Fortunately, there are effective and easy Pilates exercises to relieve these problems. Pilates focuses on body control, strengthening muscles, and improving flexibility, and it’s especially beneficial for those who spend long hours at a desk.
Here are three Pilates exercises that can help relieve stiffness in the neck and shoulder area and back pain. These exercises improve posture, strengthen your core muscles, and increase flexibility, and they can be done easily while sitting or standing—you don’t even need a mat!
Move 1: Sagittarius
This exercise opens up the chest, improves back mobility, and activates the shoulder blades. The Archer is an excellent exercise, especially for office workers and those who work at a computer, who often suffer from poor posture and tension in the upper body.
Here's how to do the move:
- Sit up straight in a chair or on the floor, or stand with good posture. Raise your arms in front of your body to a horizontal position, with your palms facing each other
- Bend your other elbow close to your body while rotating your chest.
- Bring your hand back to the front and pull the other one.
- Continue with a sawing motion, alternating hands.
Benefits:
- Improves posture and engages the chest muscles.
- Relaxes the neck and shoulder area and relieves tension.
Exercise 2: Thoracic Spine Rotation
This exercise promotes movement in the thoracic spine and improves its mobility. It is especially beneficial for those who experience tension and stiffness in the upper back and neck. The rotation opens up the front of the body and activates the muscles in the thoracic spine region.
Here's how to do the move:
- Sit upright in a chair, on the floor, or stand with your feet shoulder-width apart.
- Bring your fingertips together at your sternum, with your thumbs touching your sternum.
- Rotate your upper body and try to keep your hips still.
- Breathe calmly and try to feel the movement in the area around your thoracic spine.
- Repeat the movement 10–15 times.
Benefits:
- Improves mobility in the thoracic spine and reduces stiffness.
- Strengthens the upper body muscles and relieves pain in the back and neck
Exercise 3: Pushing the Arms Up
This exercise strengthens the upper back and improves the function of the muscles around the shoulder blades. It is an excellent exercise, especially for those who suffer from a rounded back or poor posture.
Here's how to do the move:
- Sit up straight in a chair or on the floor, or stand with good posture.
- Raise both arms straight up toward the ceiling
- Bend your arms, bring your shoulder blades together, and feel your upper back engage.
- Push back up and repeat the movement 10–15 times.
Benefits:
- Strengthens the upper back and improves posture.
- Improves body control and reduces muscle tension in the upper body.
