Do you try to work out in the winter and spring to get in shape for the beach in the summer? Many people aim to get in shape for summer and start working out no later than when the first warm spring days arrive. The light and warmth of spring get us moving, and we may find ourselves increasing our physical activity without even realizing it. So why bother trying to get in shape for summer during the winter, when the best time to train for the beach is actually during the summer!
Why Work Out in the Summer?
In the summer, there’s plenty of light from morning to night, the sun is shining, and the warmth feels good on your body. In many ways, working out in the summer is even more rewarding than in the winter. For many people, winter is a busy and stressful time at work. Still, we want to push our bodies and challenge ourselves even after a long day at work. However, working out when you’re tired can actually be harmful, as it exposes your body to injuries and overexertion.
In the summer, we usually have more energy because the days are longer. As there’s more daylight, we’re able to get up for a morning workout before work or work out again in the evening after work. The pace of work often slows down in the summer as the vacation season begins, so the workload decreases as well. That leaves us with more energy for other things, like working out.
Working out in the summer is often more enjoyable because of the warmer temperatures. In warm weather, you can keep your warm-up short, since your body is already warmed up. You’ll avoid injuries, and your body will recover faster when there’s enough warmth even after your workout. A dip in the cool ocean or lake boosts your metabolism even more.
Warm weather draws many people outdoors to work out, which means quieter workout sessions at the gym. Gym-goers can enjoy peaceful workouts without the winter crowds. When the sun is shining, indoor workouts may not be as appealing, but you can schedule your workout a little later in the evening or do a quick, effective workout so you still have time to enjoy the summer evening.
Don't forget your strength training
For many people, winter means exercising indoors and focusing on indoor sports. When summer arrives, indoor sports are set aside and workouts move outdoors. In the summer, workouts may focus more on endurance exercise and sports, such as running and cycling.
However, you shouldn’t neglect strength training even in the summer. While you can certainly reduce the amount of strength training you do, it’s still a good idea to do it at least once a week throughout the summer. Ask a personal trainer for help in planning your workouts and creating a training program. This way, you’ll get an effective full-body strength workout that will help you maintain your strength levels throughout the summer. Alternatively, you can do a short, high-intensity workout a few times a week.
By maintaining your strength levels throughout the summer, you’ll gain an edge in endurance sports. Strength training has a positive impact on your endurance fitness. For example, strength training can help you improve your running times or give you the stamina to cycle longer distances. By doing strength training in the summer, you also won’t have to start from scratch every fall. This way, you’ll make faster progress when the fall training season begins.
