How should you exercise if your goal is to start a more consistent exercise routine?

Written by: EasyFit Nihtisilta

With anything new, the hardest part is often just getting started. The second challenge is staying committed and sticking to a routine. You might also find yourself in a situation where the hurdle of going to the gym or going for a run feels so high that you keep putting it off until tomorrow—or next week. You understand the importance of exercise for your health, but…there are always those little hurdles that get in the way.

The good news is that building a consistent exercise routine doesn't require perfection—just a realistic approach.

Start small—it's really easy

One of the biggest mistakes a beginner can make is trying to do too much at once. When aiming for consistency, quantity trumps intensity—at least in the beginning. Studies show that success in making lifestyle changes depends largely on how well you can integrate the new habit into your daily routine.

Start, for example, with two 20-minute workouts a week.

This may sound like a small step, but it’s a realistic way to build a lasting routine. Once doing it twice a week starts to feel natural, you can add a third session or start increasing the duration of your workouts. Even once a week can kickstart change. This way, you’ll gradually build a foundation that will last for years to come.

Find a form of exercise that you really enjoy

The best form of exercise is the one you can stick with on a regular basis. If running feels like a chore, don’t force yourself to run. Instead, try different options: the gym, group exercise classes, swimming, walking, or even dancing.

Versatility is also a key advantage. For example, by combining strength training with light endurance exercise, you’ll get the best health benefits and keep your workouts interesting.

So, how can you exercise safely and effectively?

Start by being honest about where you are right now. Don’t dwell on what your body was capable of as far back as 10 years ago—or even last year. And remember, too, that every body is different. See your situation as an opportunity, not an obstacle. Regardless of your age, fitness level, or past exercise history, there’s a way for everyone to move their body in a way that feels good and safe.

It's reassuring to know that there isn't just one "right" way to move your body.

For example, HIIT workouts aren’t suitable for everyone as they are, but perhaps they can be adapted for beginners. Some people might get excited about running right away, while others need lower-intensity exercise, such as walking or biking. Some enjoy the energy of group exercise, while others focus better when they’re on their own at their own pace.

What they all have in common is that beginners should focus on the basics: controlled movements, body control, and gradually increasing the intensity. As you get to know your own body, you’ll find your own way of moving.

The most important thing is to listen to your body. Muscle soreness after a workout is normal, but sharp pain in your joints or back is a sign that you need to make some changes. Guidance from a professional helps you learn the correct form from the start, which prevents injuries and makes your workouts more rewarding.

Start by setting easy goals

Your goal shouldn't be "I'll go to the gym when I feel like it," but rather "I'll go to the gym every Monday and Thursday at 6 p.m." When you have a set schedule, you don't have to make as many decisions, and it becomes easier to get started.

A few practical tips:

  • Lay out your clothes the night before —when your workout clothes are already laid out and ready, you won't have to worry about what to wear.
  • Combine your workout with an existing routine —for example, “I always go to the gym on my way home from work” or “I do bodyweight exercises right after my morning coffee.”
  • Reduce barriers: Choose a gym that's on your way home from work, or work out at home if the commute is a barrier.

Give yourself permission to fail (and keep going anyway)

None of us is perfect. There will certainly be weeks when motivation is nowhere to be found or when life circumstances prevent you from working out. That’s normal and acceptable. The key difference between a lasting hobby and a brief burst of enthusiasm is how you choose to respond to those breaks.

Missing one workout isn't the end of the world.

If you let that become an excuse to quit altogether, you’ll be back to square one. Instead, accept the setback, take a deep breath, and pick up where you left off next time. There’s no need to “make up” for a missed workout or punish yourself by quitting—just get back into your routine.

A sense of community and guidance help

Starting out on your own can feel challenging. Working out in a group is more motivating, and a professional instructor ensures that you perform the exercises safely and effectively. Plus, it’s easier to stay committed when you know others are counting on you to show up.

Remember: exercise is an investment in the future
Regular exercise improves physical and mental health, helps manage stress, improves sleep quality, and boosts your energy in everyday life. These benefits don’t happen overnight, but every workout is a step in the right direction.

The most important thing isn't to start perfectly, but to start. And to keep going. At Easyfit, you'll find services that make it easy for you to get started.
